Sydney Thunder put on quite a show at the Sydney Showground on December 16 to get all-out for mere 15 runs against the Strikers, registering some potentially unbreakable records in the process.
The Thunder were asked to go after the 140 run target the Adelaide Strikers had set them but instead chose to go hunting for something much more significant: the lowest score in the history of T20 cricket.
Multiple embarrassing records were created as Sydney Thunder edged everything at their disposal, as if intentionally allowing Henry Thornton (5 wickets for 3 runs) and Wes Agar (4 wickets for 6 runs) to run through them.
The list of records created by Sydney Thunder enroute their 15 all-out masterclass
1. Lowest Score in T20 cricket history
The horrendous outing with the bat saw the Thunder register a slew of records including the Lowest-ever Score (15) in T20 format, allowing them to go past the total Turkey (21) had registered against Czech Republic in 2019.
Thunder have also become the BBL side with lowest total (15) in history, pushing Melbourne Renegades (57) to second spot.
2. Most Ducks (5) in a T20 innings
Openers Matt Gilkes and Alex Hales registered a silver duck each to set the foundation for the record to be established. Jason Sangha, the Sydney Thunder skipper also chose to contribute to it and was well supported by Chris Green and Gurinder Sandhu.
Green was the most patient of the batters to spread awareness against diminishing number of ducks across the world and faced a staggering 6 balls before poking at an away-shaper to to help Sydney Thunder register record-making (5) ducks in a T20 innings.
3. First side to get bowled out inside Power Play
Though the ball jagged in the first 6 overs, the Sydney Thunder outfit was too rash to even see the threatening period through, getting skittled out in 35 deliveries to become the first-ever side to get bowled out inside the PowerPlay period.
The 2015-2016 Bigh Bash League (BBL) Champions also recorded the shortest T20 innings in history of the format. The record was earlier held by Turkey (51 balls).
4. Lowest High-score in a T20 innings
Brendan Doggett was the pick of the batters for the Sydney Thunder and Top-scored for them with his 4 run knock. Doggett’s 4 off 2 is now the lowest score for someone who Top-scored for his or her side in a T20 innings.
However, Doggett’s 4 runs would not have been possible if not for the inside edge off his first ball evading the stumps by a whisker.
5. Lowest Men’s Cricket total since 1983
The 15 all-out from Sydney Thunder is the smallest total across all of Men’s Cricket since Surrey’s 14 against Essex in 28 May, 1983.
The lowest total across formats (6 runs) in Men’s Cricket history was recorded by The Bs against England in 1810.
