’92, is that even a score?’ – RCB Fan Deepika Padukone’s old Tweet goes viral

Deepika Padukone's 11 year-old Tweet which she made after an RCB vs RR match has gone viral.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) fans have been made to swallow some really hard pills over the past few days. Following their incumbent captain Virat Kohli’s decision to relinquish captaincy after the end of the ongoing season; an announcement that came just days after Kohli declared that he would be stepping down as India’s T20I captain after the World Cup- the last thing RCB fans were ready to see was a dismal batting collapse from their side.

The men-in-red, playing in blue jerseys to commemorate COVID 19 frontline workers on this occasion, endured a really torrid time with the bat in their tournament restart game against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Opting to bat first on a dicey-looking pitch, Kohli and his crew managed to put up only 92-runs on board before being bowled out by the knights. Andre Russell (3/9) and Varun Chakravarthy (3/13) starred in KKR’s bowling performance, as the men-in-purple exacted a successful revenge over their southern counterparts over their last year’s infamous 84/8 match.

RCB’s dismal batting performance elicited a lot of memes and jokes from fans all across the cricketing fraternity. But Virat Kohli’s men found an unlikely and hilarious troll in the form of Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone. Over the years, the Karnataka-based actress has been a passionate proponent of the men-in-red and their on-field performances. But as it turned out last night, one of Padukone’s past tweets came back to mock the very team she supports in a cruel and comical fashion.

The story behind Deepika Padukone’s 11-year-old IPL tweet

“92!!is that even a score!?way to go RCB!with u guys all the way…watching every second of it live!”. This 2010-tweet from Padukone’s account became a big point of discussion last night right after RCB’s batting collapse. To put things into context, in her tweet, Deepika was referring to RCB’s clash against the Rajasthan Royals from 2010; where her home-team had managed to bowl out the Royals for a paltry score of 92.

In that game, Praveen Kumar, Anil Kumble, and Jacques Kallis had each picked up crucial wickets; Kallis going a step further and also scoring 44 to star as RCB’s Man of the Match. But as fate would have it, 11-years-later, Padukone’s tweet would come back to mock her own team. Funny how things work out.

Meanwhile, the new-look KKR opening pair of Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer had no difficulty chasing down the below-par target. It was refreshing to see Shubman rediscover his aggressive approach at the top, as he played a solid hand of 48 off 34. His partner, debutant Venkatesh Iyer also looked mighty impressive as he compiled 41-runs off 27-balls. Thanks to those efforts, KKR chased down the target in 10-overs and climbed up to the fifth spot on the points table. RCB, meanwhile, are still stationed at the third place, but their Net Run Rate (NRR) took a major beating from this defeat.
