India is going to host the 2023 edition of the ICC World Cup and team India is already working towards building the team for the ultimate challenge. Team India will be looking forward to making the most of the home conditions and lay their hands on the esteemed trophy after their disappointing exit from the 2019 World Cup.
The World Cup was supposed to take place in the February-March window, however, in a new development, it can now be postponed by 6 months and will take place in the month of October-November. The worldwide outbreak of Coronavirus brought an unfortunate pause to all the cricketing activities around the world and all the nations had to refrain from playing any form of cricket.
World Cup 2023 will be postponed
ICC introduced World Cup Super League in 2020 to have more cricketing action amongst different nations in the form of 50-over bilateral series. The league will also determine the teams that will finally be able to take part in the 2023 World Cup. All the cricket playing nations will be involved in 8 bilateral series each which will decide the fate of the teams.
The series will be played during the period of 2 years, however, the interruption due to the pandemic has disturbed the schedule. To give enough time to the teams and to have a fair qualification process, ICC has decided to postpone the 2023 World Cup by 6 months. India as the host country has already qualified for the tournament and with India, seven other teams will automatically qualify for the tournament.
The bottom 5 nations will be playing the qualifiers and the top 2 will make it through to the 2023 mega-event. ICC in a release said, “ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 moved to October November 2023 to allow a longer qualification period. Moving the Men’s Cricket World Cup to a later window is a critical element of this and gives us a better chance of maintaining the integrity of the qualification process.”
“This additional time will be used to reschedule games that might be lost because of the pandemic ensuring qualification and be decided on the field of play,” ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney added. It will definitely be a great chance for the Indian team to take most of the advantage of the home-conditions and bring back the trophy home for the third time.
