India’s limited-overs leadership duties might soon be taken over by Rohit Sharma. Indian Captain Virat Kohli reportedly wants to leave the white-ball captaincy Captain. According to a ‘Times of India’ report, the change is about to take place as Virat Kohli wants to concentrate on his batting. The change in leadership is expected to come after the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Virat Kohli is currently the Captain of the Indian team across all formats. He was appointed as the Test Captain of team India in 2014 when MS Dhoni retired from the format. Later, in January 2017 he became India’s captain in all formats of the game as MS Dhoni decided to step down from the limited-overs’ captain role. So far, Virat has captained India in 95 ODI matches out of which India has won 65. Kohli led Team India in 45 T20Is to date and on 29 occasions the team was on the winning side.

Virat Kohli to leave the limited-over Captaincy, reports

It is reported that over the last few months Virat Kohli had a number of discussions with Rohit Sharma and the team management. He believes that he needs to concentrate on his batting in order to continue being the Best Batsman in the World. Hence he has taken the call to share the captaincy with Rohit Sharma after T20 World Cup 2021.

“Virat himself will make the announcement. He is of the view that he needs to concentrate on his batting and go back to becoming what he’s always been — the best batsman in the world.” – The Times of India sources.

If Sharma takes over the white-ball leadership, Virat would still be leading the test side. This would be a win-win situation for team India. Virat would be getting more time to work over his batting. On the other hand, team India would benefit from Rohit’s white-ball captaincy. Though the change would create a lot of buzz in social media, it’s exciting in many aspects. It would be interesting to see how the two modern-day greats perform in the new roles.

Rohit Sharma is currently in great form across the formats and would grab the Captaincy duties with both hands. He has been the stand-in captain for team India in 29 white-ball matches, out of which India has won 23. Under Rohit’s Captaincy India won the 50-over Asia Cup & the 20-over Triangular Nidihas Trophy, in 2018. His captaincy record in the IPL is known to all and speaks for itself. With as many as 5 IPL triumphs, Rohit Sharma is the most successful IPL captain.
