An ICC T20 World Cup 2022 Qualifiers match between USA and Canada turned out to be a thriller due to a dramatic last over. In what turned out to be a bizarre incident, the Canadian players went on to celebrate thinking they have won the match before actually having done so. Here’s the summary of the entire incident.
Chasing 142, USA needed 3 runs to win from the last ball. With the tail-ender Muhammad Ahsan Ali Khan on the crease, facing his first ball, the game was in Canada’s hand. The bowler, Jatinderpal Matharu, who had just sent a good-looking Karima Gore back into the pavilion with a straight delivery, looked all pumped to get his team home. Matharu bowled a delivery outside the off-stump and Ali Khan couldn’t make any connection to it with the bat.
Though it was a swing and a miss, the non-striker Rusty Theron had run down the pitch for a run. Ali Khan as well ran towards the other end to complete a run. The Canadian wicket-keeper Hamza Tariq after collecting the ball went on to dislodge the bails and ran towards the bowler to celebrate. In the process, the wicket-keeper and the bowler failed to realize that the batsman was well inside the crease before the bails were dislodged.
Until the Canadian side could realize it, both the batsmen had run the second run as well. The scores were then leveled and the match went to a super-over.
Here’s the video of the incident:
You'd think if there was the following chain of events:
– USA need 3 off 1 to win
– Batter misses the final ball
– Keeper takes it, runs to the stumps
– Canada wheel away in celebrationThere'd be no way the game goes to a super over. Then again…

After an embarrassing end to the 2nd innings, Canada could not come back into the match. Canada’s Jatinderpal Matharu conceded 22 runs in the super-over as Steven Taylor and Xavier Marshall hit 2 boundaries each. USA’s Ali Khan did brilliantly well with the ball to restrict Canada. The Canadian batsmen could only manage to score 14 runs and the USA won the match by 8 runs.
