In a recent development, it has been revealed by Telegraph that Virat Kohli may decide to rest in the ODI series against South Africa. As the tour is scheduled to start from 26th December with the Boxing Day Test, Kohli will be seen marshaling his troops in the longest format of the game.
Virat Kohli might take rest during the South Africa ODI series
The former white-ball skipper of India was recently sacked from the captaincy by the BCCI, with the president Sourav Ganguly citing the reason of having a single captain in the limited-overs cricket. Rohit Sharma, who was already the T20I skipper of India, will now be taking the charge of the ODI captaincy.
“There is, however, a strong buzz that Kohli may make himself unavailable for the three-match ODI series that follows the Tests in South Africa,” the article in Telegraph read.
The article also stated that Virat was in no mood to leave the ODI leadership but since, the selectors thought it is not sensible to have two captains in white-ball cricket, he was sacked.
“Discussions with Kohli mainly centred around the Test squad for South Africa but the ODI captaincy bit did come up. He was told in no uncertain terms that he should give up the ODI leadership since it wasn’t prudent to have two captains in white ball cricket. But he refused to budge.
Virat will be next seen in an away assignment against South Africa. Along with the white-ball leadership, Rohit will also play a bigger role in Test cricket as he will serve as the vice-captain of India in the format.
