IPL 2022 Group Format: Two groups of 5 teams each, every team to play 14 matches

The upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) returns to its 2011 model as the competition will again become a 10-team affair after the inclusion of two new teams- Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans.

Five franchises each are placed in two groups named A and B as fans are left to ponder about the format that is about to return after a gap of 11 years. A seeding system based on the number of titles won and total finals played has been used to divide the teams.

Group A features the likes of Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants, while Group B includes Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans.

How does the IPL 2022 group format work?

IPL 2022 will run from March 26 to May 19, totalling 70 league matches, out of which all the franchises will play 14 games each. A team will play two matches with their respective group members and the team drawn exactly opposite to it in the other group. It will play once against the remaining four teams.

For example, CSK will play twice against SRH, RCB, PBKS, GT (group members) and MI (the team in the same row) and once against KKR, RR, DC and LSG (remaining four teams).

Talking about the venues, the tournament this year is scheduled at two major cities of Maharashtra- Mumbai and Pune. Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, DY Patil Stadium and MCA International Stadium will host the league matches. A decision on the venue for the playoffs is yet to be taken.
