The second ODI between Pakistan and West Indies saw a unique interesting incident, as Pakistan captain Babar Azam illegally fielded a ball to cost his team five penalty runs.
During the 28th over of West Indies’ run chase, Mohammad Nawaz lobbed a drifter in Alzarri Joseph’s direction. Joseph flicked it to the square leg side, and Pakistan keeper Mohammad Rizwan ran to collect the ball. In the process, Rizwan dropped one of his keeping gloves onto the ground; and Babar, who was standing nearby, smartly picked up the glove and wore it.

Rizwan threw the ball back to Babar, who caught it with his gloved hand to complete the delivery. However, moments later, he was approached by the on-field umpires, who informed him that it was illegal for a non wicket-keeping fielder to wear gloves on the field.
As per Law 28 on MCC’s Laws of Cricket, “No fielder other than the wicket-keeper shall be permitted to wear gloves or external leg guards.” Furthermore, the law states that if a ball is fielded ‘illegally’, the batting team is awarded five penalty runs.

Thus, 5 extra runs got added to West Indies score and Babar was given a warning. The Pakistan captain was shaking his head, and had a wistful smile on his face as he got informed about the penalty runs.

Match Summary
As it turned out, even the five extra runs proved insufficient in West Indies pursuit of 276. The Nicholas Pooran-led side were bundled out for 155, with Shahmarh Brooks top-scoring with 42. Left-arm-spinner Mohammed Nawaz spun a web around the Windies batters that curtailed any form of run-scoring as he finished with figures of 10-0-19-4. The result puts hosts Pakistan in an unassailable position with a 2-0 lead in the 3-match series.
Brief scores: Pakistan 275/8 (Babar 77, Imam 72, Akeal 3/52) beat West Indies 155 (Brooks 42, Kyle Mayers 33, Nawaz 4/19) by 120 runs.
