Reports: Rohit Sharma to be sacked as India’s T20 Captain, this player is front runner to be the Next Skipper

Team India’s humiliating loss against England in the semi final of the T20 World Cup showed the need for some changes in the approach towards the shortest format.

The biggest change that the team management is looking towards is the change in leadership of the T20 team and as per the reports the Indian T20 Team might get a new captain.

Team India set to get a new captain in T20 format

“It’s early to confirm this but yes we are mulling if appointing separate captains for ODI & T20 Squads is the right way. This will help in taking away the load from one person. We need fresh approach for T20’s and at the same time consistency in wake of ODI World CUP in India in 2023. The plan can come into play starting January. We will meet and take final calls.”, informed a top BCCI official to InsideSport.

The senior players like Rohit Sharma,Virat Kohli have been rested for the T20I series against New Zealand. There are speculations that the team management won’t field senior players in the T20Is as they will prepare for the ODI World Cup which is set to be held in October-November 2023. This can eventually lead to a young player being named as the permanent captain of the T20 I side.

The BCCI will look to have a separate captain for India’s ODI & T20 teams. The Indian team will play 3 ODI’s & 3 T20’s against SriLanka possibly with two different captains in the two formats. Rohit Sharma will lead the ODI team while Hardik Pandya can continue leading the T20I team.

The series against Sri Lanka will be followed by home series against New Zealand & Australia. Rohit Sharma has faced some fitness and injury issues and hence it is important for the selectors to give him enough rest before the ODI World Cup in October 2023. Other senior players like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul too can keep themselves away from T20Is.
