Watch: Speedometer shows Umran Malik’s debut ODI wicket delivery at 84.7 KMPH Speed

Jammu and Kashmir pace menace Umran Malik made his ODI debut during November 25 match against New Zealand at Eden Park. The 23-year-old speedster impressed in his first 50-over outing and snared two wickets, dismissing Devon Conway and Daryll Mitchell. 

However, in an amusing incident, the bowler (known for bowling in excess of 150 KMPH) was recorded at 84.7 Kmph for the delivery that gave him the first of his two wickets.

Malik was introduced into the attack as the second change, bowling his first over outside NZ’s batting PowerPlay period. The bowler gave just 4 singles off his first over, and then impressed even further during his second. 

On the first ball of the 16th over, Umran Malik undid Devon Conway to get his maiden wicket at his ODI debut. The NZ opener went chasing after a lightning fast full and wide ball that took his edge and settled into the gloves of wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant. 

Interestingly though, the speedometer reading showed the delivery clocking a mere 84.7 KMPH — a speed at which Malik wouldn’t bowl even if he was in a wheelchair.

Umran Malik’s speed troubled the New Zealand batsmen for a good part of his spell (2 for 66); also accounting for Daryll Mitchell. 

However, the Men in Blue had no answers to the Latham lariat that floored them. Tom Latham owned the first ODI, tearing into Umran Malik and all other Indian bowlers en route a 77-ball hundred.

The match stood in balance with the Black Caps requiring 90 runs off the last 11 overs. Regardless, Tom Latham (145* off 104 deliveries) had other plans and looted 26 runs off the 40th over from Shardul, bringing the equation down to 66 off 60 deliveries.

Following that, spinners were swept and fast bowlers were heaved into the stands as New Zealand chased the 307 runs target with 17 balls to spare. 

Batting first, India was carried by fifties from their top 3 as Shreyas Iyer (80 off 76) top-scored for them. Late assault from Sundar (37* off 16) took Dhawan and co. to 306 runs. The bowlers, however, couldn’t defend the respectable score.
