Rohit Sharma was appointed as the Team India captain after Kohli relinquished the post T20 WC 2021. Changes were expected in the side’s fortune. However, it all remained the same as Men in Blue’s domination was limited to bilaterals.
The side choked when it mattered the most during the 2022 Asia Cup and the T20 WC that followed as Rohit Sharma the skipper looked clueless.
Thereafter, reports have emerged of the BCCI looking to appoint a different skipper and several former cricketers have shared their opinion on who the next skipper should be; Maninder Singh being the latest to join the bandwagon.
Shreyas Iyer the most deserving to replace Rohit Sharma as Team India captain, feels Maninder
Maninder Singh, who represented India in 35 Tests and 59 ODIs, has endorsed Shreyas as the most deserving candidate to be the next Team India captain. The choice differs from that of Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri, who both want all-rounder Hardik Pandya as the next limited-overs captain.
“I have been saying this for the past three to four years. Shreyas Iyer is my favourite (captain) whenever I have seen him lead any side, when he led the IPL side or anywhere, he looks like a good thinker of the game. He’s got a good head on his shoulders, and he is somebody who is very positive”.
Notably, Shreyas Iyer led Delhi Capitals to a second-place finish in IPL 2022– a feat that has gone under the radar after Hardik Pandya lifted the IPL 2022 trophy with Gujarat.
Maninder also pointed out the selflessness of Shreyas Iyer’s batting, saying that he is always looking for runs and never eats up deliveries in order to settle at the crease.
“His approach when he bats, whenever he bats he is looking for runs. If he doesn’t get boundaries from the word go, you can see him rotating his strike. He is looking for singles, trying to find the gaps and that’s his quality”.
Nonetheless, the ex-cricketer admitted that Hardik is the most probable pick to replace Rohit Sharma as the Team India captain since Shreyas Iyer isn’t a regular in the side at present.
He, however, also quipped that Shreyas should start for the Men in Blue more often.
