Team India’s skipper Rohit Sharma along with KL Rahul came in to bat in the last hour of first day’s play of the second Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Rohit got animated after he was given out by the on-field umpire and he straightaway signalled for DRS.
DRS saves Rohit Sharma after umpiring howler
The Australian side was bowled out by Men in Blue after posting a score of 263 runs in 78.4 overs. Indian openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul then came in to bat the last hour of first day’s play and both the batters made sure that the Indian team didn’t lose any wickets till umpires called stumps.
However, in the last of first day’s play Rohit Sharma was adjudged out by the on-field but the decision was overturned as the Indian skipper immediately called for DRS.
Rohit defended a tossed up delivery by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon which was pitched around the leg stump. The ball went towards the short-leg fielder Marnus Labuschagne who took a low diving catch as all the closing fielders and Nathan started appealing.
Umpire Michael Gough responded to their loud appeal and immediately raised his finger. Rohit got livid after being given out by the on-field umpire and straightaway signalled the T to the umpire in an animated matter.
As the players waited for the review, Rohit told Rahul that the ball did not hit the bat. Ultra Edge confirmed that there was no bat involved and the ball hit on Rohit’s pads before reaching Labuschagne and the umpire had to reverse his initial decision.
At the stumps of Day 1, Team India were placed at 21 for no loss with Rohit Sharma 13 batting at 13 and KL Rahul batting at 4. Australian bowlers couldn’t get the kind of start they were looking for after there batters failed yet again to post a big first innings total. Australia were bowled out for a mere 263 despite good knocks by Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb. Khawaja scored 81 while Handscomb remained unbeaten at 72.

Pacer Mohammed Shami was the pick of the Indian bowlers with his four-wicket haul and made sure that the Australian tail couldn’t hold on much. He got enough support from the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja who pick 3 wickets each on a delhi wicket which had some help for the spinners.
