Shubman Gill has done well for India in the last few months. Since scoring ODI double century, he is the first choice for Rohit’s opening partner. However, the 23-year-old batter didn’t have a memorable series against Australia so far. In Mumbai ODI, Gill lost his wicket after scoring 20. And in the same manner, Mitchell Starc trapped him again in the Vizag ODI yesterday.
Shubman Gill’s deja vu moment against Mitchell Starc
It was an action replay of the 1st ODI as it was the same delivery by Starc which trapped the Indian batter again as he played it towards the point fielder Marnus Labuschagne. Shubman Gill wasn’t impressed with his shot and was seen screaming in frustration.
The commentator Murali Kartik called out Gill for making the same mistake again. “Not learning from his mistake, poking at a wide-ish delivery. Very similar to his dismissal in the first ODI. Doesn’t time it, can’t keep it down and the fielder pouches it” Kartik commented on air. Below, there are the videos of both dismissals.

Shubman Gill’s World Cup spot is almost confirmed
Being the captain, it is obvious that Rohit Sharma is an automatic pick for opening in the 2023 World Cup. But there is still a debate that who will be his partner. Shikhar Dhawan is now not in contention for the selection in the one-day team. Although, his performance in IPL may change selectors’ mind. But for now, selectors and team management are grooming Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan for the opening spot.
Both the young batters have scored an ODI double century while opening and which has increased the competition for the role. However, the team management is preferring Shubman Gill over Kishan and the former is acting as a backup for Rohit and Gill.
Australia beat India in a one-sided game to level the series
Rohit and Kohli tried to build a partnership after losing Shubman Gill early. But again Mitchell Starc provided two wickets to the visitors in two deliveries. Rohit departed after scoring 13 while Suryakumar Yadav bagged his 2nd consecutive golden duck. The batting order collapsed like a house of cards and team India was restricted to a mere 117-run total, all thanks to Mitchell Starc’s 5-wicket haul.
Virat Kohli remained the highest scorer for India with 31 runs, and Axar Patel also scored run-a-ball 29. As Aussie came out to bat, it seemed like they were batting on a highway. In a pitch where 7 Indians departed on a single-digit score, the Aussie openers went on to score unbeaten fifties and changed the target in just 11 overs. Mitchell Starc was named man of the match for his complete domination over Indian batters. The series is now leveled at 1-1 and now Chepuak Stadium in Chennai is going to host the series decider on March 22.
