England international Tom Curran made the headlines for all the wrong reasons amid the thirteenth edition of the Big Bash League. The all-rounder has done something that he shouldn’t have done in the first place. Tom Curran crossed his limits and got involved in a heated altercation with an umpire in the practice session in Launceston on December 11, an incident that became the major talking point in the cricket fraternity.

The drama unfolded when Curran was casually running on the pitch during the warm-up session. However, the umpire was not at all happy with what he witnessed as he tried to warn Tom Curran from attempting a run-up on the pitch, which is strictly prohibited ahead of the BBL match against Hobart Hurricanes. The umpire can be heard saying to Tom Curran that he shouldn’t run on the pitch and rather advised him to run parallel to the pitch.

Why did Tom Curran face a four-match ban in BBL 13?

Despite the umpire’s warnings, Tom Curran didn’t listen to him one bit at all. The umpire simply stood at the crease, right in front of Tom Curran, telling him not to run on the pitch once again. However, Tom Curran crossed his limits by purposely running on the pitch, which nearly resulted in a clash with the umpire. The video clip of the same has spread like wildfire on social media portals.

Owing to such shocking behavior, Tom Curran has been slapped with a four-match ban in his stint with the Sydney Sixers. Tom Curran’s behavior led to a Level 3 offence charge under the ‘Cricket Australia code of conduct’. Meanwhile, the match referee by the name of Bob Parry charged the all-rounder with “intimidation or attempted intimidation of an umpire.”

Sydney Sixes’ appeal turned down

As a result, Tom Curran faced a four-match ban which is equivalent to four suspension points. Meanwhile, Sydney Sixers’ Head identified as Rachael Haynes confirmed their appeal against the suspension, adding that Tom Curran did not purposely intimidate the match official during the bizarre practice run-up. However, Sydney Sixers’ appeal has been turned down, meaning that Tom Curran will not be available till January 3.

“Umpires are part of the lifeblood of cricket and it is essential they are respected and appreciated by players at all levels of the game. We acknowledge the remorse Tom’s shown following the appeal and look forward to seeing him back in Sixers colours. “Tom has been a long-time contributor to the BBL and is a clear fan-favourite and someone we hope will continue to play an integral role in the competition moving forward,” Alistair Dobson, General Manager of Big Bash Leagues added in a statement.
