The Super Smash match between Wellington and Central Districts on Saturday grabbed the cricket world’s attention after the game witnessed a stunning piece of fielding. During the second innings of the match, no one could believe their eyes at the way Will Young lost his wicket. Troy Johnson’s stunning fielding effort made headlines, with some even claiming it to be the best they have ever seen.
The incident took place during the 6th over of the innings. Will Young played a lofted shot straight down the ground off Michael Snedden’s delivery. As the power-play was in place, no fielder was positioned at long-on. The mid-on fielder, Troy Johnson, had to sprint towards the boundary for an attempt. Just when it seemed the ball would land safely, Johnson made an attempt and luckily managed to pluck it out of the air.
But Johnson was sliding towards the boundary rope, and it was then that the miraculous fielding effort took place. Displaying great presence of mind, he managed to get rid of the ball and threw it towards his teammate Nick Kelly, who caught it effortlessly. Troy Johnson’s fielding effort hogging the limelight.

The 26-year-old Troy Johnson has been a part of the Wellington side since 2018. He plays the role of a middle-order batter known for his ability to play quickfire knocks. In the 29 Super Smash matches of his career, he has scored a total of 444 runs, which includes three half-centuries.

Talking about the today’s game, after Will Young’s departure, Jack Boyle played a sensible knock of 57 runs in 43 balls. Doug Bracewell and Tom Bruce also contributed with cameos towards the end, and Central Districts didn’t face much trouble chasing the target of 148 runs. With the victory, Districts climbed up to the 3rd position in the points table, while despite the loss, Wellington’s standing at the top of the table remained unaffected. Both teams are scheduled to play two more league matches in the 6-team tournament.
