DRS technology has been under controversy since the start of the India vs England Test series. England skipper Ben Stokes raised questions over the technical visuals that led to Jack Crawley and Joe Root’s dismissals in the series. Meanwhile, the controversy has now extended to the Women’s Premier League, as a technical glitch was witnessed in the RCB vs UPW match.
Shocking Hawk-Eye error in the RCB vs UPW match
The incident occurred during the 7th over of the UP Warriorz innings. Chamari Athapaththu attempted to sweep leg-spinner Georgia Wareham’s delivery but missed, resulting in the ball hitting her pad directly. The bowler immediately appealed, but the umpire denied it as it appeared that the ball was going down the leg side.
However, the RCB skipper, Smriti Mandhana, after a discussion with the bowler and wicket-keeper Richa Ghosh, decided to use DRS. The Hawkeye technology failed to predict the spin correctly. The delivery was apparently a leg-spin but the technology displayed it as a googly. As a result, the ball was shown to be hitting the stumps.
Chamari Athapaththu was adjudged out, but the decision left her completely shell-shocked. Her teammate, Alyssa Healy, also expressed disbelief and engaged in a conversation with the on-field umpire after the incident. But, the decision had to stand.

The shocking decision resulted in the end of the Sri Lankan batter’s innings with only 8 runs to her name. Skipper Alyssa Healy also departed after reaching a fifty. Deepti Sharma and Poonam Khemnar put up a bit of a fight in the middle, but the target of 199 runs proved too challenging to achieve. UP Warriorz could only score 175 runs in their completed innings.

RCB secured 2 points by winning this crucial encounter. Now, the Smriti Mandhana-led team has equalized their points tally with Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. However, RCB has played one more game than Mumbai and Delhi, both of whom have won 3 games in their 4 outings this season.
