South Africa and New Zealand will meet in 2024 Final

The final of the 9th edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup will take place today in Dubai, featuring New Zealand and South Africa. Both teams are yet to claim the coveted title, making tonight’s match a historic occasion as one of them will be crowned champions for the first time. The tournament began in 2009, and until now, Australia and England have largely dominated, but this year neither managed to reach the final, opening the door for a new champion to emerge.

So far, only three teams have lifted the Women’s T20 World Cup: Australia, England, and West Indies. The Aussies have dominated the tournament, winning a record six titles, while England and the West Indies have each won the trophy once. This year marks only the second time that Australia has not reached the final since the inaugural edition in 2009.

List of All Women’s T20 World Cup Winners

This year, Australia was on the verge of claiming their 4th consecutive title, but South Africa stunned them in the semifinal, securing a spot in the final for the second time. Below is the list of Women’s T20 World Cup winners from the inaugural season to the most recent.

Year Winner Runners-up
2009 England New Zealand
2010 Australia New Zealand
2012 Australia England
2014 Australia England
2016 West Indies Australia
2018 Australia England
2020 Australia India
2023 Australia South Africa

A new Champion to be crowned in 2024

Tonight, New Zealand will play in their 3rd Women’s T20 World Cup final, with their last appearance in 2010. Despite reaching the finals in the first two editions, the Kiwis experienced heartbreak in both matches. If New Zealand wins tonight, it will be their first T20 World Cup title, whether for the women’s or men’s team. This victory would also mark the White Ferns’ second ICC trophy, following their triumph in the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2000.

This is South Africa Women’s second T20 World Cup final. To date, South Africa has not won a senior World Cup, whether for the men’s or women’s team. The only World Cup victory for South Africa came from the U19 team, which triumphed in the 2014 U19 World Cup. This year, the South African men’s team faced disappointment, losing to India in the T20 World Cup final. Now, South African women are poised to turn the tide and avoid another heartbreak. Proteas fans are eager to witness history being made in Dubai.
