Australia’s Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is currently the largest cricket stadium in the world. It has a seating capacity of 1 lakh people. MCG has hosted 1956 Olympics Games, 1992 Cricket world Cup, 2006 commonwealth Games and 2015 Cricket World Cup. But MCG will no longer be the largest stadium in the World.
Now World’s largest cricket stadium will be in India. Ahmedabad’s Sardar Patel Stadium’s reconstruction is in final stages of completion. The stadium to be inaugurated in early 2020. The stadium has a seating capacity of 1 lakh 10 thousand people. Before reconstruction stadium’s capacity was 49 thousand.
The reconstruction work was started in 2015 and it’s almost done now. The reconstruction project estimated to cost around ₹ 700 crores. This stadium is commonly known as Motera Stadium and its structure is designed by the same company which has designed MCG.
Asia XI vs World XI at Motera Cricket Stadium
Yesterday, after BCCI’s 88th Annual General Meeting, Sourav Ganguly gave a confirmation of the board’s plan about the first match at new Motera Stadium. The board has planned Asia XI vs World XI match to inaugurate the biggest cricket stadium in the world. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly told, “There will be Asia XI vs World XI game but it will be subject to ICC’s approval,” There are reports that it will a T20 match in early 2020.
Bangladesh Cricket Board is also going to arrange two Asia XI vs World XI T20 matches on 18 and 21 March in 2020. ICC has given permission to the board. However, BCB is requesting BCCI, PCB, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan boards to allow their players for the selection in Asia XI squad. According to a report, the players which BCB asked from BCCI are MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Rohit Sharma.
