Shubman Gill is not someone who shows his emotions easily on the field. But on Day 1 of the Edgbaston Test against England, the India captain couldn’t hide his disappointment when Rishabh Pant threw away his wicket at a crucial stage.
Rishabh Pant, who started his innings well, was batting on 25. He looked set for a big score. India were building their innings slowly, and a strong partnership was taking shape. But then, Rishabh Pant decided to take a risk, and he paid the price.

England captain Ben Stokes read the situation perfectly. He brought in off-spinner Shoaib Bashir and set a trap in the deep. Rishabh Pant, true to his aggressive nature, stepped out and went for a big shot. But he didn’t connect well at all. The ball went high and straight into the hands of Zak Crawley at the deep mid-wicket region.

It was a soft dismissal. The Roorkee-born had time actually, and in fact, the pitch wasn’t doing much. But his choice of shot, and the timing of it, put India under pressure again. From the non-striker’s end, Gill didn’t hide his frustration. Cameras caught him shaking his head and looking disappointed as Pant walked off. It was clear that he expected more responsibility from his teammate.

But to his credit, Gill didn’t let that moment disturb his focus. He batted pretty well and found strong support from Ravindra Jadeja at the other end. The duo turned the game around by smartly rotating the strike and hitting fours only when it mattered. At the end of Day 2, India had reached 310/5. On Day 3, Gill and Jadeja continued to frustrate the English bowlers by adding a 203-run stand for the sixth wicket.
Gill went on to score a magnificent 269, hitting 30 fours and 3 sixes in his best Test innings so far. Jadeja made a solid 89, while Yashasvi Jaiswal added 87 at the top. India posted a huge first innings score of 587. England finished Day 2 at 77/3, still trailing by a large margin.
Pant’s dismissal may have frustrated Gill, but the captain led by example. He showed why patience and shot selection still matter in Test cricket, especially when the team needs someone to stand tall.
