Team India ran through an unexpected setback on the first day of the ongoing third Test against England at Lord’s, as their first-choice wicketkeeper, Rishabh Pant, had to leave the field due to injury. The Roorkee-born cricketer hurt himself during the 34th over of England’s first innings. He attempted to stop a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah that strayed down the leg side.

As it happened, Rishabh Pant dived to his left to intercept the ball, managing to get a hand to it but failing to prevent the batsmen, Joe Root and Ollie Pope, from taking 2 runs. Meanwhile, Pant was seen grimacing in pain and needed on-field medical attention from the Indian support staff. Play was briefly halted as he received treatment on his hand, but even when the game resumed, Pant kept flexing and shaking his hand in visible pain.

At the end of Bumrah’s over, Pant decided to leave the field for further medical examination. In his absence, young Dhruv Jurel was called in as a substitute wicketkeeper. Jurel took over the gloves from the 35th over, stepping up for India in what is a crucial Test match.

Before the injury, Pant had shown sharp glovework in the first session, taking two catches in the 14th over of England’s innings. His absence is a big blow for India, given his experience and impact behind the stumps. It remains uncertain how long Pant will be out of action, and his fitness will be closely monitored by the team management. Meanwhile, this situation gives Jurel an unexpected but valuable opportunity to showcase his skills on the big stage.

Rishabh Pant creates a record in Lord’s Test

On Day 1 of the ongoing Test against England at Lord’s, Pant etched his name into the record books once again by becoming the Asian wicketkeeper with the most catches in Test matches played in England.

The record-breaking moment came during the 13th over of England’s first innings. On the third delivery, Pant showed sharp reflexes as he moved swiftly to his right to grab a fine catch of Ben Duckett. Just three balls later, on the final delivery of the same over, he completed another neat take to dismiss Zak Crawley for 18 off 43 balls.

These two catches steered his overall tally to 40 catches in 12 Tests in England. In the process, he edged past Pakistan’s Kamran Akmal, who had taken 39 catches in 9 Tests. Former India captain MS Dhoni now sits third on the list with 36 catches in 12 Tests.

The first two Tests of the five-match Test series have already been completed. England won the opening match by seven wickets at Headingley, Leeds, to take the first lead in the series. On the other hand, Shubman Gill-led Team India bounced back strongly with a commanding 336-run victory at Edgbaston. Thus, they secured their first-ever win at this venue.

As for the third Test, England won the toss and elected to bat first. At the time of writing, the hosts had reached 153 for 2 in 49 overs by the end of the second session on Day 1. Former England captain Joe Root has been the pick of the batters for the hosts so far. He scored a half-century, and also, he became the first batsman in the history of Test cricket to complete 3000 runs against Team India in the purest format of the game.
