The ongoing Test is likely to end in a draw or in England’s favour, which would mean they have a chance to seal the series even before the fifth match.
While Ben Stokes is focused on the red-ball format at the moment, there is growing curiosity about his availability for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Stokes has left an impact in T20 leagues across the world, including the IPL. Even if Ben Stokes wants to play IPL 2026, the rules will not allow him to do so in the first place.
Ben Stokes Skipped the 2024 Mega Auction
The English all-rounder opted out of the IPL 2024 season due to workload management and a packed international calendar. As a result, he did not register for the mega auction. At the time, it seemed like a personal decision to manage his fitness and commitments to England. But this decision has now come back to block his return in the next edition.
New IPL Rule Bars Players Who Skip Mega Auctions
The IPL Governing Council introduced a new rule recently that prevents overseas players who skip the mega auction from entering the mini auction in the following cycle. This change was brought into effect in order to maintain fairness and transparency in the auction process.
Let’s learn how the rule works. Any overseas player who does not put their name in the mega auction cannot be a part of the next mini auction, unless the reason for skipping the mega auction is a verifiable injury or medical condition. This exception must be confirmed and approved by the player’s home cricket board.
Actually, the main reason behind this rule is to prevent players from taking advantage of the auction system. Some overseas cricketers have been deliberately skipping the mega auction in recent years, only to show up later in the mini auction, where they often attract bigger bids.
That is because during the mega auction, teams are busy rebuilding and tend to spend more cautiously. But in a mini auction, most squads are already settled, and franchises usually have money to burn, especially if they have released a few big names, leading to intense bidding wars for top players.
To stop this kind of strategic skipping and keep things fair, the BCCI stepped in and closed the loophole. Unfortunately for Ben Stokes, he is now caught in the middle of it.
Ben Stokes Not Eligible for IPL 2026 Mini Auction
For the record, Ben Stokes did not register for the IPL 2024 mega auction. Hence, he is not eligible to enter the IPL 2026 mini auction. The mini auction, expected to be held at the end of this year, will therefore proceed without one of the experienced all-rounders.
This means even if Stokes is fit, available, and willing to play in IPL 2026, he cannot do so under the current rules. Unless the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirms a legitimate medical reason for his absence in 2024, which wasn’t the case, there is no way around the restriction.

Ben Stokes has had a memorable, though somewhat limited, IPL career. He has played 45 matches in the tournament, wherein he scored 935 runs at an average of 24.6. He has two centuries and two half-centuries to his name. On the other hand, he picked up 28 wickets to his name.
He has represented Rising Pune Supergiant, Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings. His 103* against Gujarat Lions in 2017 remains the best innings of his IPL career.
