India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj made the headlines when he broke his silence on why he missed out on two major tournaments namely the 2025 Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup. The Hyderabad pacer was not part of either squad despite being in fine form and performing brilliantly in red-ball cricket.

In a candid interview, the right-arm fast bowler opened up about the real reasons behind his omission. The former RCB pacer spoke how team balance, conditions, and workload management influenced the selectors’ decisions.

Siraj Explains His Omission from India’s White-Ball Squads

He had an impressive showing in the five-match Test series against England, where he emerged as India’s top wicket-taker. In fact, many expected him to feature prominently in both the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup. However, when the squads were announced, his name was missing, which surprised both fans and experts.

Speaking to Express Sports, Siraj revealed that his exclusion wasn’t due to poor form or any loss of faith from the team management. Instead, it was part of a strategic decision made by skipper Rohit Sharma and the coaching staff.

According to Siraj, the communication from the management was clear and honest. They explained that the conditions in Dubai, where the Champions Trophy was held, heavily favored spin bowling. Hence, the team needed more spinners than pacers in the lineup.

“Rohit bhai told me directly that most of the bowling there would be done by spinners and he did not want me travelling just to sit on the bench,” Siraj said.

That conversation, he admitted, helped him stay grounded and mentally strong. Rather than feeling disappointed, he took the decision in stride and used the time to focus on his fitness and family.

When asked about missing the Asia Cup 2025 tournament, Siraj explained that the decision this time was linked to workload management. For the record, he came off a demanding Test series against England. He bowled nearly 180 overs across formats. As a result, the team management felt it was best to give him a break to recover fully.

“The Asia Cup came right after the Tests, so it was an opportunity for me to recover properly before the next series,” he shared.

Instead of being disheartened, the fast bowler embraced the move positively. He recognized the importance of maintaining fitness and longevity in a demanding cricketing calendar. This mature perspective is part of what makes him a valuable asset to India across formats.

He returned to the Test squad against the West Indies in Ahmedabad. The 31-year-old reminded everyone of his class and consistency. He bowled with renewed energy and precision. Siraj delivered a fiery spell that tore through the West Indian batting lineup.

He finished the match by taking seven wickets to his name. The pacer took four wickets in the first innings and then followed it up another three in the second innings. He played a substantial role in India’s innings and 140-run victory.

In the process, Siraj achieve a significant personal milestone. He went past Australia’s Mitchell Starc to become the leading wicket-taker in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

The Hyderabad-born pacer has played 42 Tests for India. Overall, he accounted for 130 dismissals including 5 five-wicket hauls.

As India prepares for the second Test in Delhi starting October 10, Siraj remains determined to keep his rhythm going. Mohammed Siraj has once again proved that setbacks are merely setups for greater comebacks. Whether in white-ball or red-ball cricket, the Hyderabad star continues to inspire, both with his bowling and with his attitude.
