There was a time when Ravichandran Ashwin was just another young cricketer trying to make a name for himself. He was hungry, emotional, and desperate to prove that he belonged at the top level. Back then, getting noticed by a big IPL franchise was not easy, especially when legends of the game were already around.
One wicket changed everything for him. Ashwin recently shared an old story involving MS Dhoni from the Challenger Trophy days. It was long before the two became successful teammates at Chennai Super Kings. At that time, Ashwin looked at Dhoni the same way most young Indian cricketers did, as a superstar.
The Untold Story Behind Ravichandran Ashwin’s Overexcited Celebration After Dismissing MS Dhoni
So when he finally dismissed him, emotions took over. Ashwin celebrated wildly after taking Dhoni’s wicket. It was not planned. It was not meant to disrespect anyone. It was simply the reaction of a young bowler who had achieved something he had dreamed about for years.
But Dhoni did not enjoy the celebration. Ashwin revealed that Dhoni became irritated and questioned him on the field. Dhoni reportedly asked what was so special about the celebration. For a youngster standing in front of one of India’s biggest cricket icons, it could have been an uncomfortable moment.
“I celebrated it so much that he actually got annoyed. He was like, ‘What’s there to celebrate so much?’ I told him, ‘Getting your wicket was my dream,” Ashwin shared on his JioStar experience.

Ashwin, however, answered honestly. He told Dhoni that getting his wicket meant a lot to him. It was a dream moment. Any young spinner would feel proud after dismissing one of the best finishers in world cricket.
That small exchange now feels funny and emotional when people look back at it. At that time, Ashwin was fighting for recognition. He wanted franchises to notice him. He wanted selectors to believe in him. Every performance mattered because one bad season could push a player out of the spotlight completely.
Taking Dhoni’s wicket gave him confidence. The interesting part is how life changed after that moment. The same Dhoni who got annoyed with Ashwin’s celebration later became one of the biggest reasons behind Ashwin’s success.
When Ashwin joined Chennai Super Kings, Dhoni backed him strongly. He trusted him in difficult situations and gave him confidence in pressure moments. Slowly, Ashwin became one of CSK’s most important bowlers. The partnership worked brilliantly. Dhoni’s calm captaincy and Ashwin’s smart bowling helped Chennai dominate many games. Ashwin was not just surviving in the team anymore. He was becoming a match-winner.
What makes this story relatable is the emotion behind it. Every young athlete dreams of proving himself against the best. Sometimes that excitement comes out loudly. Ashwin’s celebration was not arrogance. It was relief, happiness, and belief coming out all at once.
Ashwin also heaped praise on the sustained success of CSK between 2010 and 2015, attributing it to the franchise’s impeccable off-field management. “You didn’t have to worry about anything off the field. Family logistics, tickets, rooms, travel—everything was taken care of. Instead of worrying about these things, you could just focus on cricket,” the veteran explained.
The Tamil Nadu-born cricketer, who retired from international cricket in December 2024, admitted his final wish was to retire from the sport in front of his home crowd. While he returned to CSK, he missed out on a farewell at Chepauk. “My intention was to play for 2-3 years. It didn’t happen, that’s a different story. My last IPL game was in Delhi, but if I had played at Chepauk, it would have been even better,” he said.
