Making a Test debut for India is never easy at all in the first place due to pressure and expectations. However, some bowlers have managed to turn their very first match into a historic moment with unforgettable performances.

India has witnessed several bowlers announce themselves in a grand fashion over the decades. From Narendra Hirwani’s magical spell against the West Indies in 1988 to Ravichandran Ashwin’s dream start in 2011, debut performances have often laid the foundation for long international careers.

Now, another young spinner has joined that elite list. Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar produced a sensational spell against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh and immediately grabbed the spotlight in Indian cricket.

Here’s a look at the top five best bowling figures by Indian bowlers on Test debut.

1. Narendra Hirwani – 8/61 vs West Indies, Chennai, 1988

Narendra Hirwani still holds the record for the best bowling figures by an Indian on Test debut. The young leg-spinner bamboozled mighty West Indies batting lineup in Chennai with a spell that remains legendary even today.

At just 19 years old, Hirwani bowled with confidence, a sharp turn, and excellent control. He picked up 8 wickets for 61 runs in the first innings and completely changed the game in India’s favour.

What made the performance even more special was the quality of the opposition. The West Indies team at that time featured some of the best batters in world cricket. Hirwani’s dream debut instantly became part of Indian cricket folklore.

2. Narendra Hirwani – 8/75 vs West Indies, Chennai, 1988

Hirwani appears twice on this list because he followed his first-innings heroics with another eight-wicket haul in the same Test match.

After taking 8/61 in the first innings, the leg-spinner returned with figures of 8/75 in the second innings and finished with a stunning 16 wickets in the match. Even after nearly four decades, very few debut performances in Test cricket can match that level of dominance.

The match remains one of the greatest individual debuts in the history of the game.

3. Manav Suthar – 6/33 vs Afghanistan, New Chandigarh, 2026

Indian cricket may have discovered another exciting spin talent in Manav Suthar. The 23-year-old left-arm spinner produced a dream performance against Afghanistan and immediately entered the record books.

Suthar finished with figures of 6/33 in his debut innings and played a major role in India’s historic innings-and-300-run victory over Afghanistan. He showed excellent patience, control and maturity throughout the spell despite playing his first international match.

The Rajasthan spinner impressed everyone with the way he attacked the stumps and maintained disciplined lines for long spells. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar also praised the youngster and called him a strong contender at the Test level.

Fans on social media were equally excited, with many calling him India’s next big spin prospect.

4. Ravichandran Ashwin – 6/47 vs West Indies, Delhi, 2011

Ravichandran Ashwin announced himself with a brilliant debut against the West Indies in Delhi and went on to become one of India’s greatest match-winners in Test cricket.

Ashwin picked up 6 wickets for 47 runs in the first innings and displayed remarkable confidence from the beginning. His variations, accuracy, and smart use of angles troubled the West Indies batters throughout the match.

That performance marked the beginning of an incredible Test career that later turned him into one of India’s greatest spinners.

Interestingly, Ashwin later congratulated Manav Suthar for his memorable debut and wished him success for the future.

5. Syed Abid Ali – 6/55 vs Australia, Adelaide, 1967

Long before India became famous for producing quality spinners, Syed Abid Ali produced a memorable fast-bowling performance on debut in Australia.

Playing at Adelaide in 1967, the medium pacer troubled the Australian batters with his movement and consistency. He finished with figures of 6/55 and created history with one of the finest debut spells by an Indian pacer.

Even today, Abid Ali’s performance remains one of the most respected debut efforts by an Indian bowler outside home conditions.
