1. Virender Sehwag – 219 vs West Indies, Indore (2011)
When Virender Sehwag got going, there was no stopping him. Sehwag smashed 219 from just 149 balls against West Indies to become only the second player in ODI history to score a double century. Every part of the ground became his scoring area as he punished almost every loose delivery.
What made the innings even more special was the ease with which he batted. There was no sign of pressure despite leading the side. His 219 remains the highest individual score by an Indian captain in ODI cricket and continues to stand tall even after more than a decade.
2. Rohit Sharma – 208* vs Sri Lanka, Mohali (2017)
Few batters know how to build a long ODI innings better than Rohit Sharma. He has a unique ability to survive the early phase before completely taking control of the match.
That is exactly what happened against Sri Lanka in Mohali. Rohit started steadily but looked unstoppable once he settled. He finished unbeaten on 208 from 153 deliveries, becoming the only player to score three ODI double centuries.
As captain, Rohit led by example. His innings helped India post a massive total and reminded everyone why he remains one of the greatest ODI batters of this generation.

3. Sachin Tendulkar – 186* vs New Zealand, Hyderabad (1999)
Sachin Tendulkar did not captain India for a long period. However, he still left behind one unforgettable performance as leader.
He scored an unbeaten 186 against New Zealand in Hyderabad. Sachin looked in complete control from the first ball and didn’t let bowlers dictate terms.
For more than 12 years, this remained the highest score by an Indian captain in ODIs.
4. Kapil Dev – 175* vs Zimbabwe, Tunbridge Wells (1983)
Some innings are measured by the runs scored. Others are remembered because they changed history. Kapil Dev’s unbeaten 175 belongs in the second category.
India were staring at an embarrassing defeat after collapsing to 17 for 5 during the 1983 World Cup. The captain refused to surrender. Instead, he produced one of the greatest rescue acts the game has ever seen.
Kapil attacked when he had to, protected the lower order, and carried India to a match-winning total almost single-handedly. Many believe India’s famous World Cup triumph would not have happened without this innings. It remains one of the most valuable knocks ever played by an Indian captain.
5. Virat Kohli – 160* vs South Africa, Cape Town (2018)
Virat Kohli built his reputation on consistency. He scored an unbeaten 160 against South Africa in Cape Town as a captain.
The conditions were not easy at all. Kohli trusted his instincts and rotated the strike brilliantly. He punished loose deliveries and accelerated at the right time. By the end of the innings, he had completely worn down the South African attack.
It was a captain’s innings in every sense. Kohli stayed till the end and ensured India finished with a winning total.
6. Virat Kohli – 157* vs West Indies, Visakhapatnam (2018)
The fact that Virat Kohli appears twice on this list says everything about his dominance during his captaincy years.
India faced a massive chase against the West Indies in Visakhapatnam; Kohli responded with an unbeaten 157 from only 127 balls. The match ended in a thrilling tie. Kohli was adjudged the Man of the Match.
7. Shubman Gill – 154 vs Afghanistan, Lucknow (2026)
Shubman Gill made the headlines recently after he scored a brilliant 154 against Afghanistan. It felt like another important step in his journey as India’s captain.
The right-hander looked confident from the beginning. He rotated the strike smartly, and shifted gears whenever the team needed quick runs. He managed to build his innings in 110 balls and laid the foundation for India’s commanding total.
