Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s India debut has become one of the biggest talking points of the ongoing T20I series against England. Ever since the 15-year-old was named in the squad, fans have eagerly waited to see him in the Indian jersey. However, that wait continues after the team management decided not to include him in the playing XI for the opening T20I.
The decision has sparked plenty of debate. Many fans and experts questioned why India did not hand Sooryavanshi his debut despite his outstanding IPL 2026 season. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer have faced criticism for sticking with the experienced opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson instead.
Now, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has responded to the criticism and backed the team’s decision.

Speaking to Times Now, Shukla said there is no doubt about Sooryavanshi’s talent, but he made it clear that the final decision on team selection belongs to the coach and captain. He also said the criticism aimed at Gambhir and Iyer is unnecessary.
“We are also of the view that he is a very talented player, and he showcased that during the IPL. I have seen several comments against the team management and the coaches, but I want to make it very clear that the coach and captain will take the final decision. They are looking at the situation, and whenever the right opportunity arises, they will definitely give him his chance,” Rajiv Shukla told Times Now.

Shukla added that the team management understands the situation better than anyone else and should be trusted to make such decisions. “So, such decisions should be left to the wisdom of the team management. I don’t know why such unnecessary comments are being made about it,” he added.
Sooryavanshi earned his place with a sensational IPL There is no question about why Sooryavanshi is in the squad. The teenager forced his way into India’s plans with an incredible IPL 2026 campaign for Rajasthan Royals.
He finished the season as the Player of the Tournament after scoring 776 runs in 16 innings at a remarkable strike rate of 237.30. His recent performances convinced the selectors that he was ready for the next step.
Many believed those performances were enough to earn him an immediate debut for India.
Why is he still waiting?
Despite all the excitement around him, the Indian team management has taken a patient approach. Sooryavanshi also travelled with the squad for the T20I series against Ireland but did not get a game. India lost that series 2-0, which only increased the calls for his inclusion.
Ahead of the first T20I against England, many expected Gambhir and Iyer to finally hand the teenager his debut. Instead, they continued with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson at the top of the order.
The decision has divided opinion. Some believe India should reward players based on current form, while others feel there is no need to rush a 15-year-old into international cricket.
For now, the BCCI has made its stand clear. The board believes Sooryavanshi is an exceptional talent, but it also believes the timing of his debut should be decided by the coach and captain, not by outside pressure.
With four matches still left in the England series, Sooryavanshi still has a strong chance of making his India debut. Until then, the team management has the full backing of the BCCI as it continues to handle one of India’s brightest young talents carefully.
