The Veteran South-African wicketkeeper batsman, AB de Villiers, who initially announced his retirement from international cricket back in May 2018, recently took to twitter to announce his decision of retiring from all cricket. Though AB might have announced his retirement, the RCB fans might just have something to rejoice about. The RCB Head Coach Sanjay Bangar has hinted about de Villiers’ return into the side, in a different role.
After his retirement from the international circuit, de Villiers was seen playing various domestic T20 leagues around the world. Apart from the IPL, he featured in the Mzansi Super League, Bangladesh Premier League, PSL, 2019 Twenty20 Cup (England) and the BBL as well. Now as he has hung up his playing boots, we might see him in a different role soon.
RCB Head Coach hints AB de Villiers’s return to RCB
Sanjay Bangar, who is currently commentating in the ongoing India vs New Zealand Test series, stated on Star Sports that the players who retired recently are willing to play different roles for the franchise. Bangar said that if someone like AB de Villiers takes up the batting coach role, the team will benefit a lot. After Bangar stated this, it is being speculated that AB might been seen in a new role for RCB soon.
AB de Villiers shares a great bond with Virat Kohli and the team management. He has been an integral part of the RCB side for a period of 11 years. During his association with RCB as a player, he scored 4491 runs in 156 matches. Played crucial knocks for the side numerous times and have been pivotal in RCB’s appearances in the Playoffs. He is the second highest run scorer in the history of RCB, just behind Kohli (6707 runs).
His illustrious IPL career speaks for itself. He has scored 5162 runs at an average of 39.70 and a strike rate of 151.68 in 184 matches. AB de Villiers also holds the record of the 2nd and 3rd highest individual scores in the IPL. His invaluable experience would be best utilized by RCB, if the speculations come true.
