Sri Lankan international Angelo Mathews created an unwanted record as he became the first cricketer in the history of international cricket to be given ‘timed out’ by the officials. The experienced campaigner who is part of the ongoing edition of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 was dismissed in a bizarre fashion against the Bangladesh cricket team on November 6, Monday at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
It was a kind of dismissal that left a bad taste in the all-rounder’s mouth and that he would try to forget quickly. Even the Sri Lankan fans were unhappy with the mode of dismissal and expected Angelo Mathews to behave as a professional. Angelo Mathews gets dismissed timed out
The incident took place during the 25th over when Samarawickrama fell prey to Shakib Al Hasan’s delivery as Mahmudullah took a catch at the deep mid-wicket. Soon after the fall of dismissal, Angel Mathews came out to bat but made the headlines for the wrong reason as he seemed to have brought the wrong helmet with him, which wasted some minutes during the passage of the play.
Meanwhile, the substitute quickly sprinted to give Angelo Mathews the correct helmet. As this happened, the on-field umpires were visibly unhappy and had a word with the Sri Lankan all-rounder. Meanwhile, the Bangladesh players appeared for time-out and the umpires obliged to the appeal since it was well within the rules of the game.

The Tigers gathered and celebrated the wicket and Angelo Mathews was seen explaining to Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. On-field umpires namely Marais Erasmus and Illingworth had a short discussion with Mathews and Bangladesh didn’t withdraw their appeal. Moments later, Mathews made his way back to the dressing room in a disappointing manner.

MCC rule for timed out – “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”
