The first ODI between West Indies and Team India took place at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados recently. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and invited the Caribbeans to bat first. West Indies were skittled out for just 114 (23 overs), courtesy of India’s disciplinary bowling performances.
Indian spinners namely Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja weaved the magic with the ball and decimated the hosts’ batting line-up. The chinaman bowler accounted for 4 dismissals whereas Jadeja took 3 wickets. West Indies’ ODI captain Shai Hope top-scored with 43 runs (4 fours, 1 six).
In response, Team India got off to a sloppy start as the majority of the batters fell prey to cheap scores except for Ishan Kishan who scored a brilliant half-century, which is his first ODI fifty in West Indies. The young southpaw constructed his innings with the help of 7 fours and a six. India got the job done as they won the game by 5 wickets.
BCCI reveals why Suryakumar Yadav sported Sanju Samson’s jersey
There were several incidents of cricketers donning their teammates’ jerseys in international and franchise cricket leagues. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav hogged the limelight after he was spotted wearing Sanju Samson’s jersey during the first ODI against West Indies and the picture of the same spread like wildfire on social media.
Some netizens were of the notion that Suryakumar Yadav was backing Sanju Samson’s selection since the Indian team management picked Ishan Kishan over Samson in the ODI opener. However, the BCCI clarified the matter to avoid further confusion. It has been learnt that Suryakumar Yadav had issues with the size of his injury.
Rightly so, he even notified the team management regarding the same. Although the cricketer somehow managed to do a photoshoot session with the jersey, he wasn’t feeling comfortable with the size and hence requested a change in his jersey size. It did take some time for him to take the field due to this issue.
Since the issue wasn’t fixed back then, he requested Sanju Samson to hand over his jersey for the time being. According to the rules, cricketers have no right to tape the names printed behind their jerseys. However, the BCCI source clarified that Suryakumar Yadav will be receiving his new jersey following the second ODI.

“There was some size issue with his jersey. We were told about it two days before the game. He will be receiving his new jersey after the second ODI as the BCCI has shipped it with Indian team players selected for the T20 series. Till then he will be wearing his teammate’s jersey while playing,” a BCCI source said.
