The recently concluded ODI series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka was well and truly competitive, with both teams firing all their cylinders to come out on top in the battle. All three games of the ODI series took place at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. While the hosts drew the first blood in the series by winning the game by six wickets, the tourists made a comeback in the second game with a three-wicket win to level the series. The series decider had moments that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
Batting first, Sri Lanka posted 235 in their allotted quota of 50 overs, courtesy of Janith Liyanage’s unbeaten 101 off 102 balls, laced with 11 fours and 2 sixes. On the other hand, Taskin Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers as he accounted for three dismissals, giving away 42 runs and also bowled a maiden over in his full quota of 10 overs. In reply, the hosts found themselves in a spot of bother at one stage but managed to change the complexion of the game with the help of Tanzid Hasan – 84 (81), Rishad Hossain – 48 (18), Mushfiqur Rahim – 37 (36).
Mushfiqur Rahim trolls Angelo Mathews with a broken helmet gesture after winning the series
Experienced campaigner Mushfiqur Rahim hit the winning runs for the hosts in the 41st over as Bangladesh won the game by four wickets and clinched the series by 2-1. However, what followed at the post-match celebrations became a major talking point on social media. While the Bangladesh players were celebrating the series win with the title, Mushfiqur Rahim was seen holding a helmet and then playfully imitated Angelo Mathews’ helmet malfunction incident in World Cup 2023 and video clip has gone viral on social media.

While the incident left the Bangladesh players in splits, it must have surely rubbed salt into the wounds of Sri Lankans who not only lost the series but would be angered by Mushfiqur Rahim’s antics. For the unversed, Angelo Mathews was controversially given out in the World Cup 2023 clash against Bangladesh, where he became the first batsman to be dismissed ‘timed out’ in international cricket after he failed to come to the crease within a stipulated time.
