In 2019, the first time a World Cup final’s result decided by a Super Over. But England’s win in the Super Over created controversies. The result of the final decided on the number of boundaries. According to ICC’s rule if a super over also ends up in a tie then the team who has hit most boundaries in the match will be declared as the winner. But deciding a world champion on the basis of boundaries doesn’t seem fair enough. This controversial match has forced ICC to rethink about this rule. However, before ICC takes any action Cricket Australia has already abandoned this rule for the upcoming Big Bash League.
Big Bash League New Super Over Rule
This boundary counting rule will not be applied in Big Bash League 2019. Cricket Australia said that if Big Bash League final goes to super over and it ends up in a tie then again a super over will be played until there is a clear winner. This rule will be applied in both men’s and women’s BBL. In the case of a league match, if a super over ends up in tie then there will be no more play and the match will be declared a tie.
ICC is also looking to change this rule. Anil Kumble-led committee will discuss this rule in early 2020 so there will no controversy in upcoming ICC events. Now, ICC’s next events are T20 World Cups in 2020 and 2021.
BBL New Playoffs System
Big Bash League 2019 starting 17th December and the final of this 8-team tournament to be played on 8 February 2020. Cricket Australia has also introduced a new playoffs system in BBL. Now, top 5 teams will enter the play-offs and it consists of 5 matches; eliminator, qualifier, knockout, challenger and final.
4th and 5th teams will play the eliminator and the winner will qualify for the knockout. 1st and 2nd team will play qualifier and the winner will enter the final. 3rd and winner of the eliminator will play knockout and the winner will face the loser of the qualifier in challenger. The winner of challenger will become the 2nd team to qualify for the final.
