Twenty years have passed since Brian Lara set his untouchable 400-run record in April 2004. The Caribbean batter achieved this remarkable feat by smashing an unbeaten 400 runs off 582 balls against England in a Test match at St. John’s. To this day, Lara remains the only player in Test cricket history to reach the 400-run mark. Prior to Lara, the record for the highest Test score was held by Matthew Hayden, who scored 380 runs in 2003 against Zimbabwe.

After Brian Lara’s historic innings, ten more batters have managed to surpass the 300-run mark in Test cricket. However, none has been able to break his record of 400 runs. Mahela Jayawardena came the closest when he played a monumental innings of 374 runs against South Africa in 2006. But in the modern era, batters’ approach has become more aggressive in Test Cricket, thus, there’s a possibility that we may see Brian Lara’s record getting broken in the near future.

Yashasvi Jaiswal posing a threat to my record, said Brian Lara

Meanwhile, the legendary batter has named a player who has the ability to breach the 400-run mark. Brian Lara said Yashasvi Jaiswal is the batsman whom he fears the most in terms of his record being surpassed. “If there’s someone I feel my record is in danger from, it’s Yashasvi Jaiswal.” said Brian Lara.

In the interview, Lara also reveals his first meeting with Yashasvi Jaiswal. “The only thing I can reveal about that conversation is that I think he is an outstanding young cricketer. What I like about him is that he is very humble and willing to work. The first time I met him (last year), I immediately found myself attached to him.”

Jaiswal made his Test debut for India in 2023 against West Indies. Following, he had a record-breaking run in India’s Test series against England from January to March this year. In five matches against England, the 22-year-old batter scored a total of 712 runs. During the series, he smashed two quickfire double-hundreds, showcasing his potential to break Brian Lara’s record.
