Washington Sundar in county cricket

Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar is leaving no stone unturned to make his presence count for Lancashire in the ongoing County Championship.

Playing in his first game in England’s premium domestic competition, the Tamil Nadu off-spinner made an impression of his potential by claiming 5/76 against Northamptonshire. He remained unbeaten on 34 in the second innings with his side winning by four wickets.

Sundar didn’t make any great contribution with the bat in the next game against Kent, where he faced compatriot Navdeep Saini. He went without taking any wicket in the first innings but supported pace bowler Tom Bailey in bundling up the opposition.

Watch: Washington Sundar foxed Jordan Cox

Sundar induced the edge of Kent skipper Jack Leaning with wicketkeeper George Lavelle taking the catch behind the wickets. Sundar bowled a sharp off-turner to knock the off stump of Jordan Cox. The batsman found it too difficult to read the delivery and it crashed into his stumps.

His third dismissal was Matt Henry who was stumped out by Lavelle after attempting a big hit. Bailey took four of the last five wickets as Kent was shot down to 127 for all out and Lancashire clinched the game by 184 runs. Sundar has completed eight dismissals in two games so far in the competition.

Lancashire currently placed third in Division 1

It was a come-from-behind victory for Steven Croft & co after their first innings folded up on 145. Bailey picking up six wickets helped the hosts to keep Kent’s lead to 125.
Josh Bohanon’s ton (134) and stupendous batting from Lake Wells (98) helped Lancashire to gain a massive lead of 311.

With this win, Lancashire moved up to third place in the points table with five wins, five draws and one loss in the championship from 11 games. They will next face arch-rivals Yorkshire on September 5 at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.
