With the help of another match-winning performance from Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal managed to defeat Ireland on Wednesday. The Portugal Captain, scored 2 goals in the closing minutes of the game, taking his team to victory. With two more goals to his tally, Ronaldo added yet another feather to his cap. He became the top international goal scorer after scoring his 110th goal on Wednesday.
Ronaldo becomes the Top International Goal Scorer
Toppling Iran’s Ali Daei from the number one position, now Ronaldo is the highest goal-scorer in International football. The Portuguese striker earlier did not have a very good start in the match as he missed a penalty in the 15th minute of the game. Later, the Irish defender John Egan gave his side the lead in the 45th minute. The Portugal side was in trouble until the historic moment came when Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal in the 89th minute of the match and became the top international goalscorer in Men’s football. With the goal, the scores in the match got levelled 1-1. Going into the extra-time, Ronaldo yet again struck a goal in the 6th minute and lead his team to victory. The match was all-important as it was a part of World Cup Group A qualifiers.
Ronaldo took 180 games to make it 111. On the other hand, Ali Daei had scored 109 goals in 149 games. Although Ronaldo becomes the top International Goalscorer, he’s still significantly behind Christine Sinclair, who is the top goalscorer in Women’s football with 187 goals by her name.
