The South African Domestic T20 Carnival, the CSA T20 Challenge 2022, has begun this week in the Rainbow Nation. This will be the Eighteenth successive season of the T20 Challenge after the first edition was played back in 2003/04. The 21 day-long tournament started on the 7th of February and the Final is scheduled to be played on the 27th of February. All the games of the tournament will be played in St George’s Park, Port Elizabeth. Interestingly, Cricket South Africa (CSA) is hosting this season of the CSA T20 Challenge in a managed event environment (MEE). While being cost-effective as compared to the bio-secure environment, it also provides a stress-free environment to the players who have been living in the bio-bubble since a long period of time now. Some big names such as Dean Elgar, Janneman Malan and Rilee Rossouw will also be featuring in the competition.
A total of eight teams, namely- Western Province, Warriors, Lions, Dolphins, Northwest, Titans, Knights and Rocks, will be featuring in the tournament. Each team will be playing the other seven teams once in the league stage. The top four sides in the points table, at the end of the league stage, will progress to the knockouts. The Imperial Lions have won the last two editions of the competition, winning another one will make them the second team ever to retain the title 2 times back-to-back.
