After 12 years since the memorable India vs Sri Lanka final in Wankhede Stadium, the two teams are back at the same venue. Rohit Sharma and Co. will meet the 1996 champions in their 7th match of the ongoing tournament. With 6 wins in 6 games, India are only unbeaten side in the World Cup 2023 while Sri Lanka is on the brink of getting knocked out. Ahead of the IND vs SL match, we will analyze the Wankhede Stadium Mumbai Pitch Report, the last ODI match scorecard at the venue, and the stats registered at the ground during this World Cup.

Like the other 9 venues, Wankhede is also scheduled to host 5 group matches. The venue has already hosted two games, the first between South Africa and England, in the second one, South Africa faced Bangladesh. South Africa batted first in both games and aggregated 380+ scores in twice, which clearly shows the surface is batting-friendly. Both England and Bangladesh felt the scoreboard pressure, and in their attempt to score fast, they lost wickets, resulting in their defeats

Wankhede Stadium Mumbai Pitch Report for IND vs SL Match

The pitch of Wankhede Stadium is a paradise for batsmen. The ball comes nicely onto the bat helping batters to time their shots. The same kind of pitch is expected for the IND vs SL, World Cup match. The toss holds less significance in Mumbai. Batting first, a team aims for 300+ runs, while the bowling side targets restricting below 300. Scores below 300 seem achievable but above create pressure that’s tough to chase. The biggest ODI total ever chased at the venue is 280, by New Zealand vs India in 2017.

The Pacers’ role is going to be crucial here, if they succeed in giving breakthroughs during the power-play, they can restrict the opponent from posting a big total. But if top-order batters manage to play well with the new ball they can trouble the bowling side throughout the innings. The Wankhede Stadium pitch may make it challenging for bowlers to bowl in the death overs, especially in the first innings.
