Mumbai Indians have produced several talented players over the years. Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Krunal Pandya, and Tilak Varma are just a few examples. Mumbai Indians’ legacy of nurturing talent carries on in IPL 2025.
In MI’s season opener at Chepauk, Vignesh Puthur made a spectacular debut by taking three wickets against CSK. And today, in Mumbai Indians’ first home game of the season at Wankhede, Ashwani Kumar delivered a historic four-wicket haul on his IPL debut against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Ashwani Kumar claims historic 4-fer on IPL debut
The 23-year-old Ashwani Kumar played a crucial role in dismantling KKR. He first dismissed captain Ajinkya Rahane and then took three quick wickets—Rinku Singh, Manish Pandey, and Andre Russell—in quick succession, helping restrict KKR to just 116. Ashwani could only complete his three-over spell as Kolkata were bowled out in just 16.2 overs.
With this, Ashwani Kumar became the first Indian to take four wickets on IPL debut. If Ashwani had completed his 4-over spell, he would have had a good chance of taking a 5-wicket haul. Notably, in IPL history, only two bowlers have taken five or more wickets on debut. In 2017, Andrew Tye, debuting for Gujarat Lions, took 5 wickets, and in 2019, Alzarri Joseph, on his Mumbai Indians debut, registered an astonishing 6-wicket haul—the best debut bowling figures in IPL history.
Congratulating the debutant, Ravi Shastri asked after the innings what he had eaten for lunch to produce such a brilliant debut. To this, the Mumbai Indians bowler replied that he hadn’t eaten at all due to the pressure of making his IPL debut.
“I didn’t eat anything for lunch, just had a banana. Due to the pressure of making my IPL debut, I didn’t feel hungry. I made a bit of plan, and they (team management) told me that it’s my debut match so enjoy yourself and back your skills.” said Ashwani Kumar after taking a 4-wicket-haul.
Born in Mohali, Ashwani Kumar plays domestic cricket for Punjab. Mumbai Indians’ scouts noticed him while he was bowling in the Shere-e-Punjab T20 tournament. They were impressed by his pace, bounce, and line length. This is why he was picked up by the Neeta Ambani-owned franchise for ₹30 lakh in the IPL 2025 auction, and look how well that decision has turned out.
