Dinesh Karthik was recently seen talking to Aakash Chopra in a Youtube video. In the video titled, ‘HOW did DK get into COMMENTARY?’ a lot more topics were touched other than DK’s commentary stint. One such topic was the IPL, in relation to which the veteran Indian keeper said that the Orange Cap is one of the silliest awards according to him.
Indian Premier League, the most famous Cricket league in the world, awards Orange Cap and the Purple Cap at the end of every season. The Orange Cap is awarded to the highest run-scorer of the season and likewise, the purple cap is awarded to the bowler with the most number of wickets at the end of the season.
Dinesh Karthik though doesn’t seem to be liking the concept of the Orange cap. Karthik thinks that the shortest format of the game is about the ‘impact of runs’ and not the ‘number of runs’. He suggests that the finishers are the most impactful players in the IPL and they would never get to win the Orange Cap as they bat at lower positions.
It is fair to say that the top-order batsmen have a greater chance to win the Orange cap as they get to bat more as compared to the lower-order batsmen.

DK emphasized the fact that the impact players like Russell and Pollard would never score as many runs as the openers. He also suggested that the organizers should come up with different criteria for awarding the run-getters.
“I think the Orange Cap is one of the silliest awards to give away in the IPL. They (the organizers) could think of it in a much better way. Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell would never win the Orange Cap because they would not get the runs a Rohit Sharma or a Quinton de Kock or any other opener gets.”
Karthik said that most of the time it’s the finishers who influence the games rather than the top-order batsmen.

“What they would do though has influenced a lot more matches with their batting than the openers during the course of a season. We are still in that number of runs and that kind of thing. But (in T20Is) it comes down to that impact things,” said Karthik.
Karthik is currently enjoying his commentary stint with Sky Sports. He is in the commentary panel for the 5-match test series between India and England, for the channel. DK will next be seen in action in the second leg of the IPL which starts on September 19.
