On January 24, the International Cricket Council released the first set of its Teams of the Year, which included Men’s Test Team of the Year, Men’s ODI Team of the Year, and Women’s ODI Team of the Year. On January 25, ICC will announce Women’s T20I Team of the Year, Men’s T20I Team of the Year, ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year, and ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year.
It will continue on January 26 with the naming of the ICC Umpire of the Year, ICC Men’s Associate Cricketer of the Year, ICC Women’s Associate Cricketer of the Year, ICC Emerging Men’s Cricketer of the Year, and ICC Emerging Women’s Cricketer of the Year. The winners of the two most prestigious ICC awards, the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year and the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year, will be announced on January 28.
Jaiswal, Bumrah, and Jadeja named in ICC Test Team of the Year, but no Indian in ODI XI
Pat Cummins has been named the captain of the ICC Test Team of the Year, and he is the only Australian in the XI. The top three run-scorers for England in 2024, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Ben Duckett, all feature in the team. Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis, who had a dream run last year, becoming the second-fastest to reach 1,000 Test runs, also earns a spot in the ICC Test Team of the Year 2024.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, with 1,478 runs, was the highest run-scorer for India in Tests last year and rightfully makes it to the XI. Jasprit Bumrah, with 71 wickets, topped the tally for most Test wickets in 2024, leaving no room for debate about his inclusion in the XI. Bumrah is a strong contender for the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award as well.
Ravindra Jadeja is the third Indian player in the ICC’s Test XI of the year. England’s wicket-keeper, Jamie Smith who debuted in 2024 and quickly cemented his place with 637 runs in 15 innings, is named as the keeper in the XI. The team also includes two Kiwis—Kane Williamson and Matt Henry.
Surprisingly, no players from Pakistan and South Africa made it to the ICC Test Team of the Year, and the same goes for Indian players in the ICC ODI Team of the Year. The year 2024 saw limited ODI cricket, with India playing just three ODIs in the calendar. The ICC ODI Team of the Year features four Sri Lankans, three Pakistanis, three Afghans, and one West Indies player.
As for the Women’s ODI Team of the Year, South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt has been named captain. The team includes two Indian stars, Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma. Mandhana finished 2024 as the top run-scorer in Women’s ODIs, amassing 747 runs, including four centuries.
