Virat Kohli ended all speculation about a Test comeback with one firm message. He did it right after scoring a brilliant century (135) in Ranchi against South Africa. Fans hoped his vintage hundred might push him towards a surprise Test return. But Kohli made it very clear. He is done with that chapter.
Rumours began soon after India suffered a painful Test whitewash (0-2) to South Africa earlier in the year. Many supporters felt the team needed experience at the top. Naturally, Kohli’s name floated around. Some former cricketers and analysts suggested that the board might even approach Virat Kohli. Social media only amplified the noise. A small spark became a wildfire.
Virat Kohli shuts down Test retirement U-turn talk
But Virat Kohli kept quiet until Ranchi. He let his bat speak first. His 135 reminded everyone of the old Kohli. Once he finished the job with the bat, he addressed the topic everyone waited for. “That’s how it’s always going to be – I’m just playing one format now.” With that one line, he shut the door on any Test comeback talk.
The clarity in his voice matched the clarity in his mind. Kohli has moved on mentally from Test cricket. The rumours did not come only from fans. Reports suggested that the BCCI might be considering a conversation with Kohli after India’s Test struggles. But the board reacted fast. Officials dismissed the talk as baseless. They insisted no meeting happened and no proposal was made.
“What’s being said about Virat Kohli is just a rumour. There has been no conversation with Virat Kohli about this. Do not give weight to rumours. Nothing of that sort has happened,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said in a statement to AajTak.
Kohli’s decision is rooted in his current mindset. He spoke openly about it after the match. Cricket, for him now, is a space where mental clarity matters more than anything else. His statement after the match confirmed what many suspected. He wants to give his full focus to one format. It helps him stay fresh. It keeps him healthier. It gives him a longer runway in international cricket. And at 37, that is a smart choice.

India, on the other hand, must now move forward in tests without depending on former pillars. The team is shifting towards a younger core. There will be growing pains. But it opens opportunities for new faces to build their own legacy.
Fans may feel a bit emotional. They have seen Kohli dominate Tests for more than a decade. They have seen him battle in England, dominate in Australia, and carry India at home.
Meanwhile, the Ranchi hundred proved something important. Kohli still has the hunger. He still has the timing. He still has the ability to change matches. But he wants to use that ability only in white-ball cricket now. His chapter in Test cricket is complete, and he is fully focused on what lies ahead.
When asked about how he delivers performances like he did in Ranchi, Kohli said, “Well, if you, you know, I’ve played 300-odd ODI games and so much cricket over the last 15-16 years. As I said, if you’re in touch with the game and you know that when you’re hitting balls at practice, your reflexes are there, your physical ability is there to bat long. If you can bat an hour and a half, two hours in the nets without taking a break, you’re kind of meeting all those markers. Yes, I understand if there’s a dip in form, you look for games and you try to get that form back. But as long as you’re hitting the ball well and you’re playing good cricket, I think at this stage with the experience that I have, for me, it’s about being physically fit, mentally ready and excited to play the games that I’m playing. And more or less, everything else should take care of itself.”
