IPL is just one and a half months away from now. The season is going to be big for many reasons. MS Dhoni will be making his return to the cricket while RCB will play the season with a new Avatar. The IPL 2020 list of squads is in front of us. However, the schedule for the upcoming edition has not been announced yet. But it is confirmed that IPL will kick start on 29 March at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

The cash-rich league is a big platform for the cricketers to earn name and fame. Every team aims to get the hands on the title. But individually players’ eye orange and purple caps. The player who scores most runs gets the orange cap and highest wicket-taker of the season wins the purple one. Here is the list of all the orange and purple cap winners till IPL 2020.

IPL 2020 List Of All Cap Winners

2008 (Shaun Marsh & Sohail Tanveer): It was the season after which T20 cricket started getting importance in the world cricket. Rajasthan Royals won the IPL title under Shane Warne. Sohail Tanveer of Pakistan was awarded the Purple cap for taking 22 wickets in the 11 matches.

IPL 2008 was a dream season for Shaun Marsh. In 11 matches, he had scored 616 runs which earned him the orange cap. The latter’s performance helped Kings XI Punjab reached the semi-final. However, the team couldn’t make it to the final as CSK beat them by 9 wickets.

2009 (Mathew Hayden and RP Singh): At that time Matthew Hayden was the opener of Chennai Super Kings and at that season he scored 572 runs while RP Singh of Deccan Chargers won the Purple cap for striking 23 wickets in 16 matches of the season. The performance of the bowler helped Deccan chargers lift the title in 2nd edition of the league.

2010 (Sachin Tendulkar and Pragyan Ojha): In 2010, for the first time an Indian bagged the orange cap. It was none other than God of cricket. In fact, the purple cp winner was also an Indian, the chinaman bowler Pragyan Ojha. It was the first time when no member from the champions of the season donned the precious caps.

Tendulkar who also captained Mumbai Indians that year aggregated 618 runs in 15 matches. He led the team to the final where they got a defeat against Chennai Super Kings. Ojha who was a part of Deccan Chargers was at the peak of his career in 2010. He picked up 21 wickets in the season and also became a prominent member of the test team.

2011-13 Orange & Purple Cap Holders

2011 (Chris Gayle & Lasith Malinga): The list follows two of the greatest T20 players who will be playing key roles for their respective sides in IPL 2020 – Chris Gayle and Lasith Malinga. Both have got immense success playing in the league. They have bagged some of the big records in their names. Malinga is currently the highest wicket-taker in IPL history while Gayle stands at the 6th position in leading run-scorers’ list. The destructive opener has hit most sixes in the history of Indian Premier League.

In 2011, initially, no IPL franchise picked Gayle. He was expecting to play for West Indies that year. But then he received a call from RCB team management and offered him to play fo the franchise. Gayle announced his arrival in RCB with a match-winning century against his former team Kolkata Knight Riders. In the season he scored 608 runs in just 12 matches. Malinga too made the list of purple cap till IPL 2020 glorious. Being one of the most consistent bowlers in history, Malinga picked 28 wickets in 16 matches IPL 2011 season.

2012 (Chris Gayle & Morne Morkel): It was the first time when a batsman remained the most run-scorer in two seasons. This time, gayle got to play the full season and broke the barrier of 700 run-mark. In 15 matches, Gayle reached 733 runs. Delhi Daredevils’ Morne Morkel picked 25 wickets in 2012 and bagged the big price. However, once again cap holders were not the part of the winning side (Mumbai Indians).

2013 (Michael Hussey & Dwayne Bravo): It was the first time when both the cap winners were from the same time. CSK’s Hussey and Bravo had a dream season in 2013. Hussey scored join-most runs in an IPL season (733) while Bravo became the first bowler to take 30 or more wickets in a single season of the T20 league. Bravo who is still the part of CSK in IPL 2020 had added his name to the list taking 32 wickets in the 2013 season.

List Of IPL 2014-16 Cap Winners

2014 (Robin Uthappa and Mohit Sharma): It was the first time when a Kolkata Knight Riders player added his name to the list of cap holders. Robin Uthappa had become a key player of KKR after scoring 660 runs in the season. However, the franchise didn’t retain him for the IPL 2020 season after Kerala batsman showed a lack of consistency in the previous season.

Once again a CSK bowler donned the purple cap in 2014. Pacer Mohit Sharma picked had picked 23 wickets after player 16 games. With the help of his consistent performance, he made a place to 2015 World Cup squad. In IPL 2020, Mohit will deliver to Delhi Capitals.

2015 (David Warner & Dwayne Bravo): The Australian opener David Warner has performed consistently in each and every season he has played. But 2015 was the season when he finally received the biggest individual price for a batsman. The skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad scored 562 runs in 14 matches. However, despite a brilliant display with bat Warner’s team didn’t make it to the IPL 2014 playoffs. the team had ended the league stage at the 6th position.

Bravo was the leading wicket-taker in 2015. After taking 26 wickets in the season he became the first bowler to win two purple caps in the history of the Indian Premier League. The all-rounder also performed with the bat in the edition.

2016 (Virat Kohli & Bhuvaneshwar Kumar): Breaking Chris Gayle and Michael Hussey’s 733 runs record was not a cakewalk. But in 2016, RCB skipper Virat Kohli made this difficult record even more difficult. Virat Kohli was having the best form of his life in 2016. He smashed 4 centuries in the season and ended the IPL with 973 runs, which put him at the top of the record most runs in a single IPL season so far till 2020.

Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore was defeated by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the high scoring final match. Bhuvneshawar Kumar played a very important role in SRH’s maiden title win. The pacer was awarded the purple cap for taking 23 wickets.

2017-19 Winners

2017 (David Warner & Bhuvaneshwar Kumar): It was the second time after 2013 when both orange and purple cap winners were from the same team. Warner and Kumar both won the respective awards for the second time. Warner continued his form scoring 641 runs in 14 matches while Bhuvaneshwar won the purple cap for the second consecutive IPL taking 26 wickets in the league stage.

2018 (Kane Williamson & Andrew Tye): It was another season which was mostly dominated by the SRH. Kane Williamson who captained the season in the absence of Warner, scored 735 runs and led the team to the final. On the other hand, Andrew Tye became the first Kings XI Punjab player since Shaun Marsh in 2008 to win a cap. The Australian bowler took 24 wickets in the season.

2019 (David Warner & Imran Tahir): Making his return to IPL after facing a one year ban for ball-tampering, Warner scored 692 runs in just 12 games. The Warner and Bairstow duo caused havoc throughout the season. Imran Tahir of CSK who struck 26 wickets won the purple cap in 2019.
