Ricky Ponting has parted ways with Delhi Capitals after 6 long years. The legendary cricketer served as the Head Coach of the franchise from 2018 to 2024. The franchise’s performance improved under his coaching, with IPL 2020 remaining their best season. In 2020, DC made it to their first-ever final but unfortunately suffered a defeat against Mumbai Indians.

Sourav Ganguly to replace Ricky Ponting as DC Head Coach

In the 2024 season, Delhi Capitals finished in 6th place in the points table. During his tenure, Ponting remained Head Coach of DC for 7 straight years, but they were not able to achieve the desired results under him. Therefore, the franchise has decided to move on and part ways with the World Cup-winning captain.

Sourav Ganguly revealed this news to the media and also disclosed that he will take over the role from the IPL 2025 season. In the last season, Ganguly served as the Director of the Delhi Capitals team, and before that, he was the BCCI President.

“I have to plan for next year’s IPL. I want to win the IPL for Delhi Capitals once. The mega auction is next year, and hence I have started planning from now on. Let me break some news: head coach Ricky Ponting will not be with the Delhi Capitals. Geoffrey Boycott was right, as Ponting has not been able to take the franchise forward in the past 7 years. I have to speak with the franchise and ask them to look at Indian coaches. I will be the head coach. Let’s see how I perform,” Ganguly told the newspaper Aajkal.
