Team India’s young wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan is into some headlines but this time for not-so-good reasons as he made a cheeky appeal in the first ODI against New Zealand despite knowing that the batter was safe.
Veteran Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar wasn’t impressed by Ishan’s attempt as he believed what Ishan Kishan did wasn’t cricket.
Ishan Kishan tries for a Tit for Tat against Tom Latham
During the 16th over of New Zealand’s chase, Team India’s wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan made a strange appeal that left everyone surprised. On the fourth delivery of the over bowled by Kuldeep Yadav, New Zealand skipper Tom Latham went back deep into his crease and comfortably defended the good-length delivery.
Just when everything looked normal, Ishan started appealing for hit-wicket as the bails were dislodged. Latham looked completely surprised with the appeal as the on-field umpire signalled towards the third umpire. The replays shown on the big screen made it very clear that the Kiwi batter was nowhere close to the stumps and made no contact that could’ve dislodged the bails.
The bails were actually dislodged by Ishan Kishan in a cheeky manner as he tried to have some fun on the field. The young wicketkeeper then gave a witty smile to the New Zealand skipper as he walked back towards his position.

Ishan faced some backlash for his immature act as the veteran Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar who was part of the commentary panel said what he did wasn’t cricket. On the other hand, Murali Karthik believed that Ishan shouldn’t have appealed if he did it just for entertainment.
It’s worth noting that Tom Latham had earlier tried a controversial dismissal of Hardik Pandya where it appeared as if Latham had dislodged the bails but the third umpire didn’t have any conclusive evidence to rule the decision in favor of Hardik Pandya. This dismissal sparked a massive debate on social media.

Despite the two controversies, it was a nail-biting game as New Zealand just fell short by 12 runs in response to India’s mammoth total of 349 courtesy of Bracewell’s heroic knock of 140 in just 78 balls.
