A controversial statement from Team India skipper Rohit Sharma ahead of tomorrow’s high-pressure semifinal against England has put him in the firing line of the fans.
The Hitman has been far from hit in the tournament and has scored just 89 runs from 5 matches, averaging a shade under 18.
Rohit Sharma discredits Suryakumar’s fearless approach; gets slammed by fans
Rohit appeared at a press conference today before the all-important knockout game against Jos Buttler’s men on November 10.
He talked about how the cricket giants had to leave their much-hyped fearless approach as the tournament began.
He said: “I remember talking about playing fearlessly. For us looking at the conditions here, it is not about coming and swinging the bat. It is only because of conditions. It is about adapting to conditions”.
However, at this comment, a valid counter question got thrown at Rohit Sharma as a reporter asked how the change in conditions has not influenced Number 4 batter Suryakumar Yadav (225 runs, SR 194) at all.
Rohit, presumably trying to defend himself discredited SKY’s efforts by saying that since Suryakumar isn’t a big name, there isn’t much baggage on him. He then went on to joke about how by baggage he didn’t mean suitcases because SKY shops a lot.
“That is because he does not carry any baggage. By baggage, I don’t mean suitcases– those he carries a lot because he loves his shopping. I meant he doesn’t take much pressure on himself and that is his personality in general”.
The attempted joke (to deflect the counter question) from Rohit Sharma did not land at all. Rather, it left the general public fuming.
Here’s how the fans have reacted to it:
OK Rohit, we understand baggage means suitcase.

Notably, Rohit has looked all at sea in the ongoing 2022 T20 World Cup. Team India had planned on attacking from ball one and taking the game on to unsettle the opposition. However, it is Rohit Sharma who has been unsettled.

Not only have his runs been scarce and lucky (Rohit’s sole 15 runs+ knock came after a dropped catch against NED), the approach has been shambolic.
The skipper was meant to be a role model for no-hecks-given approach that Team India had set out to implement. Ironically though, he has been the most sluggish (89 runs off 81 balls, SR 110) of the top 4 and looked tentative at best.
