Lanka Premier League’s 3rd season has gone underway on December 6. The 4th match of the 2022 edition was between Galle Gladiators and Kandy Falcons which turned out to be a low-scoring game. One of the reasons, the Gladiators were restricted to a mere 121-run total was Chamika Karunaratne taking a brilliant running backward catch of dangerous-looking Nuwanido Fernando. But he paid a price for taking this catch as he injured himself badly.

The horrific incident took place in 4th over of the innings, when Fernando played a mistimed lofted shot off Carlos Brathwaite’s delivery. Three fielders ran to take the catch but in the end, Chamika Karunaratne reached under the ball. However, as he was running backward, he couldn’t judge the ball properly and it landed on his mouth but managed to catch the ball despite facing a blow.

But damaged was done as the Sri Lanka pacer left with a bloody mouth. The blood was drooling out of his mouth and it is believed that four of Chamika Karunaratne’s front teeth has been broken in the incident. The 26-year old cricketer was immediately taken to Hospital for the surgery. He is likely to return to the Kandy Falcons squad for upcoming matches. Galle Gladiators vs Kandy Falcons match summary

Just after Nuwanido Fernando departed after scoring 13 off 8 balls, Carlos Brathwaite struck another wicket in the same over as Iftikhar Amhed got clean bowled on duck. Galle were 28-6 at a moment, but all thanks to a 65-run partnership between Imad Waseem and Movin Subasingha, they managed to put 121 runs on the board.

Kandy Falcons who were left with 10 players after Chamika Karunaratne’s injury chased the target comfortably in 15 overs. Carlos Brathwaite who took 4 wickets received the man of the match award. With this win, Wanindu Hasaranga-led side climbed at top of the points table.
