The T20 World Cup in 2024 is just six months away, and the BCCI finds itself in a challenging situation. The board has yet to decide the captain for the upcoming mega event. With Rohit Sharma having not played a single T20I since November 2022 and Hardik Pandya recovering from an injury, Suryakumar Yadav is currently leading the side in their absence. However, it appears that either Rohit or Hardik will return to take charge of the team for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Gautam Gambhir has no personal favourite for India’s Captaincy

However, Gautam Gambhir holds a different perspective on the ongoing debate. The 2007 T20 World Cup winner does not have a preferred choice for leading the team. According to him, the crucial factor lies not in the captaincy but in what the players bring to the team. Gambhir supports the idea of BCCI selecting the entire squad based on the players’ form and then choosing a captain among them.

He suggests that if Rohit Sharma is not in good form, he shouldn’t be included in the squad. Conversely, if he performs well before the World Cup, then he should take on the role of captain. The cricketer-turned-commentator also suggested selectors to look for better options in the IPL. Gambhir thinks it will be a great idea to pick an in form player as captain.

“Captaincy is not important, the team is. First, pick the players who are in form. And a player who is in form should be made the captain. You won’t make an out-of-form player the captain, right? Whether that is Rohit Sharma or Hardik Pandya or Suryakumar Yadav? If Rohit isn’t in form, you probably won’t even pick him. Picking the captain is not important, picking the right squad for the T20 World Cup is. And before that we have the IPL. If anyone performs well then you should consider him as well” said Gautam Gambhir.

In response to the same question, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah stated that no decision has been made regarding who will lead India in the T20 World Cup. “The World Cup is starting in June, we have the IPL before that and the series against Afghanistan (in January). We will take a good decision,” said Jay Shah.
