From the much-criticized barren phase with the bat (up until a few days ago) to leaving national captaincy across formats, the last few years weren’t kind on Virat Kohli.

Nonetheless, three consecutive thirty-plus scores and two back-to-back fifties were all it took for Kohli to go back to being Kohli once again.

Following the India versus Pakistan game on September 04, Kohli took a lot of questions in a lengthy and open press conference.

From the impact of his break to the praise for the management and new India skipper Rohit Sharma, the run-machine addressed several topics during the conference.

The hottest takeaway from the Virat Kohli candid, however, was him talking about the behaviour of other players after the Delhi-born left national red-ball captaincy at the beginning of 2022.

Kohli reveals that only MSD messaged him after he quit test captaincy

Reminiscing his captaincy relinquishment in the longest format of the game, Kohli emotionally quoted, “Many players have my number (contact) but only MS Dhoni messaged me when I denounced (left) test captaincy. If there’s respect between two people… It shows.”

“They (former players) criticise me on TV but no one messaged me back then,” Kohli added.

Notably, the Men in Blue won managed to lift five consecutive Test Maces under the captaincy tenure of Virat Kohli. Kohli’s reign remained instrumental to the rise of fast bowling in test games. The whole attitude of the players changed.

Thus, not getting a simple appreciation from others was heartbreak for Kohli and the 33-year-old’s words oozed sadness over it.

Multiple cricket pundits and legends including Kapil Dev and Gautam Gambhir have openly critiqued Kohli quite often. Thus, it can be presumed that Kohli was talking about them (alongside Kohli’s recent teammates) in the second half of his comments.

Coming back to the interview, Kohli praised Suryakumar for being a rare talent while also crediting the management and Rohit for maintaining an ideal environment in the dressing room.

In addition, the batter also showed respect to Babar and the Pakistan Team in the press conference.

Though Virat Kohli isn’t involved in the captaincy of Team India in any of the formats anymore, he remains an indispensable part of the nation’s foreseeable future. Especially if he capitalises on the recent boost that his short break has generated.
