Not Pandya or Suryakumar: Harbhajan Singh backs This Youngster to lead Team India

Harbhajan Singh ignored Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav to pick the future Indian captain.

Captaining Team India has never been that easy without a shadow of a doubt. The last time Team India won the ICC trophy was back in 2013 in the Champions Trophy final against England under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Ever since the legend called it quits from international cricket, the captaincy baton was passed on to Virat Kohli. Although India performed superbly well in overseas conditions, their inability to end the ICC title drought haunted the team to the core.

Rohit Sharma entered the picture and became a skipper across formats. Under his captaincy, India came close to ending the ICC title drought but surrendered at the hands of Australia in the ICC World Cup 2023 final. Meanwhile, the senior pro is 36 years old and has a few years of cricket left in him. It is absolutely imperative for the Indian selection committee to groom another captain for the future.

Harbhajan Singh backs Shubman Gill to lead Team India in future

It is quite evident that the BCCI will not stick to Rohit Sharma as the captain for the long term, considering that he is at the fag end of his cricketing venture. Meanwhile, the former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has picked the right candidate to lead Team India in the future. Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya have earlier led the team and would certainly be considered by the selection committee when the opportunity comes calling.

However, Harbhajan Singh thinks otherwise as he went on to name Shubman Gill as the future captain of Team India. Currently, Shubman Gill is the captain of Gujarat Titans. The youngster who has never had prior captaincy experience at international or domestic level is just starting to get the hang of things by picking up the tricks and trade of captaincy in the ongoing season of the IPL.

The Turbanator reckons that Gill has all the tools and ingredients to lead the Indian cricket team to success. “Shubman Gill is the future Indian captain. He is a class act and can lead the national team to success. Gill has done well as GT captain in this season of the tournament,” Harbhajan Singh added in a statement.
