After Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the 50kg wrestling final in the 2024 Olympics, Indian fans were left in shock. This was a major setback for Indian wrestling, as India typically expects to win 2-3 medals in wrestling at every Olympics, but this year, not a single medal was secured.
However, Aman Sherawat has provided some much-needed relief to India. In the men’s 57kg freestyle bronze medal match, Aman defeated Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz to secure a medal. This was Aman’s first Olympics, and he fulfilled his dream of winning a medal.
At the age of 21, he became the youngest Indian to win an Olympic medal. Before Aman, boxer Vijender Singh held this record who won a bronze medal in 2008 Olympics at 22 years and 9 months. By winning this medal, Aman has continued the legacy of Indian wrestlers, who have brought home medals in every Olympics since 2008.
With this victory, India has reached a total of six medals in the 2024 tally. So far, India has won five bronze medals and one silver medal at Paris 2024. The silver medal is won by javelin throw superstar Neeraj Chopra.
The bronze medal winners include Manu Bhaker in women’s 10m air pistol, Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh in 10m air pistol mixed team, Swapnil Kusale in 50m rifle, the Indian men’s hockey team, and now Aman Sherawat has added his name to the list of bronze winners.
Aman Sherawat hails from Birohar, Haryana. He first got the recognition when he won a gold medal in the U23 Wrestling World Championship in the 57kg category. Following this, Aman won a bronze medal at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
