The recently concluded PSL 2024 match between Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators was a modest-scoring affair as the bowlers from both teams fancied their chances by containing runs and taking wickets when it mattered the most. During Islamabad United’s innings, Quetta Gladiators’ player Jason Roy made the headlines after he set a great example of sportsmanship in cricket.
During the fourth ball of the 11th over, Agha Salman nudged Mohammad Wasim Jr’s delivery towards the mid-wicket and then took a comfortable single. The right-handed batter, for just a second, thought of completing the second run before he realized that one of the fielders caught up with the ball. Salman who was just a few steps away from the crease immediately tried to get back before confusion triggered between him and the bowler.

While Salman tried to get back to the crease, his bat got stuck to Wasim’s boot and the latter collected the ball and whipped the bails off. From Salman’s perspective, he might have thought that Wasim was perhaps obstructing his path, which is why he was unable to make it to the crease. However, Wasim was not obstructing the path as he positioned just behind the stumps to complete the run-out. Jason Roy who witnessed the scene went up to the on-field umpire and decided not to appeal.

An incident like this is such a rare occurrence in the sport and Jason Roy drew plaudits for showcasing incredible sportsmanship. While winning is important, it is also important to know how to play the game in the right spirit and Jason Roy’s sportsmanship moment became the major talking point after the match. Talking about the game, Islamabad United posted 138/9 in their designated quota of 20 overs as Agha Salman top-scored with 33 off 23.

On the contrary, Abrar Ahmed and Mohammad Wasim Jr were the top performers with the ball for Quetta Gladiators as the duo took three wickets apiece. In reply, the Gladiators had hiccups in the run-chase but somehow chased down the target in 18.2 overs and won the game by three wickets. Jason Roy top-scored with 37 off 18 balls including 6 fours and a six. Skipper Rile Rossouw was adjudged the Player of the Match as his unbeaten 34* guided the team to victory.
